General Information for All Competitions

Admission Fee and Parent Attendance at Competitions

We would LOVE for ALL parents to attend our competitions. Parents have the opportunity to watch the band progress from the beginning of the season to our final performance. Each show gets better! Parent enthusiasm in the stands helps our students to perform at their best and shows the judges and other bands that we have a supportive band family.

Competitions are fundraisers for the hosting band. We are occasionally given passes for a certain number of parent helpers. These will be distributed to parents/families based on volunteering and the needs of the band. Other parents and families attending the competition and sometimes volunteer helpers must pay admission fee to competitions to support the host band. We do not know the fee for each particular competition, but generally admission runs between $5-10.

If we have space on the busses for parents to travel with the band, Ms. Harrison will let us know. Seats on the bus are usually reserved only for parent chaperones/volunteers and can not be guaranteed.

Uniform Information

For 2018-19 Competitions we will be wearing our BLACK uniforms. Ms. Harrison will let students know which shirt (Purple band shirt or show shirt) underneath the uniform. Please be sure that you bring your uniform in on the FRIDAY BEFORE EACH COMPETITION for our rehearsal! Items that are not hanging on the hanger in the garment bag (shoes, socks, compression shorts, gloves, etc) should go into each student’s purple drawstring bag and hang that over the garment bag. Please make sure your shoes are clean—use shoe polish if needed (kiwi preferred). We are using black hats and tuba berets.

Hospitality Information

At each competition we share in a potluck meal. Each band member contributes to the meal. We will eat at BHS before leaving for the competition. If you are not planning to join in on the potluck, please bring your own dinner. Cookies will be provided to all students after the competition. Please notify the hospitality chair at if your student has any allergies so that we can make sure to have food he/she can eat.

Here are a few reminders about preparing and sending food for our potluck meal.
1) EVERY band student needs to bring an entree’ or side dish to share with the group;  almost anything goes - fried chicken, a casserole, fruit salad, vegetable tray, pasta dish, etc.
2) Please do not bring a dessert as your only contribution. If you would like to bring a “sweet” along with your entrée’ or side – feel free.  We love sweets!
3) We can keep dishes hot or cold, so bring them ready to serve.
4) Bring dishes in DISPOSABLE pans. We do not have a place to safely store non-disposable dishes.
5) NO need to bring serving utensils.
6) Drinks are provided.
7) Please label foods containing nuts or seafood.

For those parents who were asked to bring cookies (our “cookie brigade”) - Thank you! Please remember to also bring your entrée’ or side along with your cookies – 4 dozen, labeled if containing nuts & in shoe boxes (if possible, great for transporting)

If you have any questions or need additional information about “feeding the band”, feel free to contact Dawn Wade or Lori Moore (

Behavior at Competitions:

Please take a few minutes to remind yourselves of the rules you agreed to in our marching band contract and in the WCPSS student handbook. Students may be sent home during the course of the competition if these expectations are not met.

  • Students must be sure that they have everything they need to travel—correct uniform, instrument, band t-shirt, money, jacket, etc.
  • Students will sign up for a bus and will travel on that bus throughout the season. They must check in with the bus captain each time they enter the bus.
  • Students must adhere to the schedule given for the day by the band director. Each competition will run differently, so students must be attentive and focused throughout the event.
  • We will travel as a group in our two lines to any destination (dressing rooms, bathrooms, warm up areas, etc).
  • Students are expected to remain calm and quiet throughout our event.
  • In the event that we are able to watch other bands perform, students will sit with the band in our chosen area and will watch quietly and respectfully.
  • Students may earn the privilege of some free time during the competitions to visit concession stands, booths, etc. This will depend on the schedule and our behavior during the trip.
  • Failure to follow any of these procedures will result in the loss of performance opportunity, and may result in administrative action upon returning to school. Future travel opportunities may also be taken away depending on the severity of the offense.
